Paloh, Jeli and Aidil deserve a better life

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 10:24 PM PDT

I am saddened to hear of the plight of two young orphaned elephants, 'Paloh' and 'Jeli' held in shackles for long hours at Johor Zoo.

In the wild, elephant calves at these tender ages stay close to their mothers and other females in the herd.

While the herd travels through the dense forests of Malaysia, the calves suckle on their mothers' milk until they are four to five years old.

Paloh and Jeli, who are only two years old, deserve the same tender nurturing care as how an elephant mother would provide them.

Keepers in any zoo who raise these youngsters are their surrogate mothers.

It is most unfortunate that these young calves are being shackled for training purposes to make them 'behave' at Johor Zoo.

Similarly, I have visited Danga Bay Zoo, a zoo located close to Johor Zoo where an adult bull elephant 'Aidil' is shackled to a three or four foot long chain, 24hrs a day.

The matured bull passes his days tethered in a tiny space deprived of any form of social bonding.

Keeping a male elephant, which is an highly intelligent animal, alone without any companion or any form of enrichment and above all without much space to move, is extremely cruel.

This infringes the Malaysian Wildlife Protection Law Act 76 and the Seaza (South East Asian Zoological and Aquarium Association) code of ethics and its Animal Welfare Minimum Standards (for all institutions keeping captive wildlife).

Paloh, Jeli and Aidil, who all kept under dire conditions and silently enduring extreme stress, deserve a better life.

They should be rescued and transferred to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary as soon as possible.
