Paloh, Jeli and Aidil deserve a better life

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 10:24 PM PDT

I am saddened to hear of the plight of two young orphaned elephants, 'Paloh' and 'Jeli' held in shackles for long hours at Johor Zoo.

In the wild, elephant calves at these tender ages stay close to their mothers and other females in the herd.

While the herd travels through the dense forests of Malaysia, the calves suckle on their mothers' milk until they are four to five years old.

Paloh and Jeli, who are only two years old, deserve the same tender nurturing care as how an elephant mother would provide them.

Keepers in any zoo who raise these youngsters are their surrogate mothers.

It is most unfortunate that these young calves are being shackled for training purposes to make them 'behave' at Johor Zoo.

Similarly, I have visited Danga Bay Zoo, a zoo located close to Johor Zoo where an adult bull elephant 'Aidil' is shackled to a three or four foot long chain, 24hrs a day.

The matured bull passes his days tethered in a tiny space deprived of any form of social bonding.

Keeping a male elephant, which is an highly intelligent animal, alone without any companion or any form of enrichment and above all without much space to move, is extremely cruel.

This infringes the Malaysian Wildlife Protection Law Act 76 and the Seaza (South East Asian Zoological and Aquarium Association) code of ethics and its Animal Welfare Minimum Standards (for all institutions keeping captive wildlife).

Paloh, Jeli and Aidil, who all kept under dire conditions and silently enduring extreme stress, deserve a better life.

They should be rescued and transferred to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary as soon as possible.

Kebebasan bersuara segar dalam Umno, kata pemimpinya

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 10:39 PM PDT

"Saya cadangkan beliau membuka blog beliau sendiri agar senang orang ramai membalas hujah-hujah beliau. Nanti bila beliau baca komen-komen dalam blog beliau, saya rasa beliau jugalah orang pertama yang akan meminta perdana menteri mengekang kebebasan bersuara di negara ini," katanya.

'Bogus Malaysians' - royal commission needed

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 03:54 AM PDT

I am surprised. The breast beating, portrait burning, screaming obscenities 'champions of nationalism' - politicians and a certain mainstream vernacular newspaper alike - have remained strangely comatose at claims that foreigners and PR holders are being granted citizenship status just as speculation mount on a snap general election in Malaysia.

Awarding a citizenship is no laughing matter.

It is no 'suka suka' matter.

A person can become a citizen of Malaysia only by registration or naturalisation.

In cases by registration, where a person is by operation of law is a citizen but has yet to be registered, such a person is entitled to citizenship upon application and be registered as a citizen of Malaysia.

For cases by naturalisation, this refers to the process of admitting a person not a citizen of Malaysia, to citizenship.

This is subjected to the requirements and conditions as laid out by the Government of Malaysia.

And one of the requirements of citizenship is that that person is disallowed to hold any other country's citizenship.

In this latest salvo fired at the federal agencies and the now under siege Malaysian Election Commission, many pertinent questions have been raised against the professionalism, impartiality, dedication, bipartisanship, governance and ethics of federal agencies.

More so, with this shocking revelation of over 1,600 cases of foreigners being given the right to vote between March to June this year alone.

Using this as an issue doubts are also raised over other border protection programs such as the current drive to register millions of migrant workers - both legal and illegal.

Opposition lawmakers have asked for an emergency sitting of Parliament to be called during the Ramadan fasting month to debate the issue of fraudulent voters.

And we must allow this in view the seriousness of the allegations and its impact on the sovereignty of the nation!

The issue of fraudulent voters is not a new issue making its rounds as it was quite infamous in Sabah where the allegations were rather serious as those behind that exercise were clearly identified but till today, remain 'untouchable!'

Till today, it is one of the contentions that have upset the locals in Sabah as they feel their state is being overrun by foreigners from the Philippines and Indonesia now carrying local identity papers which has upset the balance of power and threatens the socio-economic conditions of that state.

The Selangor claims are said to be just the 'tip of the iceberg' but if the allegations are true, then this is basically treason.

Are we going to hear professional and well qualified answers, or will those raising the questions be threatened, shouted down and accused of undermining the nation and threatening its security?

Since Selangor is mentioned, we, who are bipartisan, are setting up a task force in Selangor to verify these serious allegations and I am being advised that similar moves are now being made in all peninsula based states by other parties and NGOs!

In the present political climate and undercurrents it would be rather foolish to issue denials or threats.

It is best we address this issue with sincerity, common sense and professionalism.

A bipartisan high powered royal commission must now be set up to address these serious allegations which if true, threaten to undermine the sovereignty of the nation, its national security and foundation!

Dr Jacob George is the president of the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor.

Set up a national education reform consultative council

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 11:50 PM PDT

LLG Cultural Development Centre is highly concerned about the announcement by the Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin in mid July that the ministry was readying a study on a complete revamp of the existing education system.

The report is to be submitted to the cabinet for approval end of this year.

Education reform is of paramount importance. Any country proposing to review its national education system as a whole, will inevitably have to study thoroughly the shortcomings of the current education system, and to consult the opinions of various stake holders in relation to education reform.

We urge the Education Ministry and the Higher Education Ministry to make public details of the proposed education reforms such as the guiding thoughts, principles, objectives, strategies and implementation in the course of undertaking such reforms.

The proposed reforms must be carried out in a transparent manner, allowing people and education organisations to take part in the process. This is to ensure that the true spirit of democracy will prevail, particularly in this area of utmost importance to all the people.

We hold the view that the government should set up a national education reform consultative council, comprising representatives from various education organisations.

These representatives should be involved in the process of brainstorming, idea contribution, planning, implementation and monitoring of the education reforms.

LLG Cultural Development Centre contends that the education reform ought to incorporate four principles as follows:

1. Democracy in education decision-making The government should reform the highly centralised decision-making process in the education system.

The government should also dismantle policies which prohibit strictly certain education providers, particularly those providing vernacular education, from acting as education providers.

In fact, the government ought to decentralise its educational decision-making power to the state governments, municipal governments and even down to the community, allowing the community people to participate in the planning of education.

If the people decide to increase the numbers of Chinese schools, Tamil schools, national schools or any other linguistic schools in their community, the respective governments must seriously consider implementing the proposals.

In short, the government should not suppress primary, secondary and higher education provided in the various mother tongues as medium of instruction. In fact, the federal government should provide educational resource to support these efforts.

2. Equitable provision of education resources. The government must recognise the equal status of all schools by ensuring the fair and equal distribution of education resource for all the schools.

If the government maintains the discriminative education policy and subject tax payers who send their children to Chinese schools and Tamil schools to unfair treatment, the education reform will lose its progressive meaning and is a contradiction to the concept of 'people first' as advocated by the prime minister.

To ensure equality, we propose the adoption of an Education Equality Act that stipulates clearly that the government must treat all schools fairly. To us, this act is an important cornerstone of any education reform.

3. Academic Independence. The most worrying issue for higher education in Malaysia is the lack of academic independence.

The vice chancellors of universities are taking orders from politicians, as witnessed by the recent parking of riot police trucks in university campuses, something that would be taboo in countries that observe strictly the principle of university autonomy.

The universities and politicians have been working hand-in-hand to manipulate campus elections. Academicians with critical thinking have been sidelined and denied promotions by the authorities.

The promotion of academicians is not based on merit but nepotism and ethnic identity.

The University and University Colleges Act suppresses the freedom of thought and movement of students, nurturing graduates who follow uncritically the thoughts and ideas propagated by state elites.

The education reform must abolish all these problems if higher education is to be intellectually strong, creative and vibrant.

4. Elimination of racism. We are extremely worried about the escalating racist mindset in university campuses and schools.

For instance the indoctrination of racist thinking by the Biro Tata Negara, the use of history text books that have been severely distorted and imbalanced, the adoption of the Bahasa Malaysia text book 'Interlok' that instills the idea of Malay supremacy, and the hiring of teaching staff who insult students with racist statements, and the like, are some such examples.

The government must dissolve Biro Tata Negara, abolish all practices that promote racism and seriously punish teaching staff who make racist statements.

TOH KIN WOON is president of the LLG Cultural Development Centre.

Wikileaks: ISA 2008 halang ahli Umno lompat parti

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 10:37 PM PDT

Additional ministerial post for MIC not appropriate

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 02:05 AM PDT

Giving an additional ministerial post to MIC as announced by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak at the MIC AGM on July 30th is not appropriate and the timing is totally wrong.

What the PM did was to please the MIC but did not take into the account the situation of the Indian community which is facing very serious challenges in areas like education, employment opportunities, contracts, housing, gangsterism etc.

The BN government should come up with constructive policies and implement strategies to overcome the issues with definite timelines.

This would have been a good selling point to the community.

Giving a ministerial post to G Palanivel does not go down well because he has failed to win in the last general election and we should not reward candidates who are not winnable candidates.

He needs to undergo rehabilitation to improve his interpersonal skills, spend more time with the voters to identify the needs, make innovative plans to improve performance and become a winnable candidate.

The Indian community does not need two ministers but needs help from the government to address the challenges the Indians are facing.

Their share in the economy, employment and educational opportunities are declining, thus forcing the Indians to vent their anger by supporting opposition candidates.

Lastly, MIC should work for all Indians and should not confine themselves just to helping MIC members or focus on Tamil related problems.

Patriots put country first and party politics last

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:26 PM PDT

There are some who insist that a segment of Malaysians are out to tear Malaysia apart. They insist that stunts like the Bersih march disrupts city life and disturbs the peace and tranquility of Malaysia.

Worse, there are individuals who feel that the status quo of the country is for them to protect and so they make police reports of this supposedly dangerous elements who call for peaceful protests and who encourage their Twitter friends to attend the peaceful yellow rally.

They see this segment of the public as troublemakers and perhaps unpatriotic Malaysians.

In the 1950s, America had segregation laws in many southern states. This segregation laws made it illegal for black Americans to eat, walk or take public transport together with white Americans.

There were white drinking fountains and black drinking fountains, there were tables only for white people in some restaurants and segregated seating for the coloreds.

To many who grew up in the segregated America this was the norm. However there began a group of women in Montgomery who decided that this was wrong.

Black people should not have to pay for their bus fares at the back of the bus and they did not have to give up their seat if a white American had no seat whether or not he was young or old.

They began the Montgomery bus boycott which led to the arrests of Rosa Parks and other women which sparked the march of 250,000 people through the Washington Mall toward the Lincoln Memorial led by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Were these Americans who marched through Washington DC unpatriotic subversive elements?

A read of King's famous 'I have a Dream' speech would show him to be a true believer of the American dream and a patriot at heart. In his speech he said; "And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream."

Was it inconvenient and did it disrupt the peace of America in the summer of 1963? Of course it was, and it did.

There were riots, there was police brutality and there were even some who made police reports about their fellow black brothers because they did not believe that this cause was worth fighting for.

After all what's the big deal if they were treated as second class citizens? At least they still had jobs and peace and a government that worked. It was not worth protesting about and disrupting business.

The truth is these men and women who bothered to stand up against the law of the land in the 1960s believed in their heart that this was an unjust and repressive law.

Segregating citizens based on their skin colour was simply wrong even though it was the law of the land at that time.

Where did they get this conviction that led to the famous Civil Rights movement that changed the shape of America forever?

Believe it or not, it was a conviction based on the Bible that all man are created equal and that God shows no partiality. They acted on this believe and marched against segregation laws of their time.

A Bible believing Christian always acts upon his or her Biblical conviction even if it goes against the laws of the land.

Asking fellow Christians to join in a peaceful protest for what he or she believes is being true to her own convictions.

My point is that criticising or marching against an unjust and repressive law is not unpatriotic at all.

Simply put, patriotism is a love for the country and willingness to sacrifice for it.

Those that decided to march on 9th of July for Free and Fair Elections were not unpatriotic.

In fact they believed in the Malaysian dream set forth by our own founding fathers, heroes like Allahyarham Dato' Onn bin Jaafar, a man before his time; and Allahyarham Tunku Abdul Rahman Bapak Malaysia.

If they did not believe in Malaysia, they would have long join the thousands of people who have fled our shores in search of a better future.

The truth is these people love Malaysia as much as those who oppose Bersih and they should be given the right to express themselves through peaceful protest as much as the Ibrahim Alis and their venomous racism, or a Mahathir Mohammad who fights against anything that moves and breathes.

We should protect the minority as much as we do the majority and their right to peaceful protest.

Don't confuse the sovereign state of Malaysia for any political party. Malaysia as an entity is larger than that.

She is made up of the millions of people with diverse religious, political and social beliefs with each to be respected and cherished.

We must not let any political party hijack this Malaysian agenda for their own existence.

The goal is building a better Malaysia and it means listening to every segment of society and protecting their rights to speak and express themselves.

Peace may not always be achievable, but by pursuing justice for all, I believe peace is inevitable.

Anwar tak nampak kedudukan terancam

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:17 PM PDT

More ministers won't help sorry state of Indians

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 01:59 AM PDT

It may seem like a historic feat for Prime Minister Najib Razak to return to how his father had run his cabinet way back in the 70s with two Indians being given a full ministership.

During that time it was Sambanthan and Manickavasagam - but all that changed after Samy Vellu took over from Manickavasagam in 1979 and today after 32 years are we getting two ministers.

But will these two ministerships bring in the actual reform initiatives that the Indians need?

Will the two ministers be given portfolios that can uplift the Indians from the years of neglect? Or will it be another sweetener to get Indian votes and then make them beggars again?

Take education as a prime example; when we see the day when Chinese and Tamil languages be brought back as a Pupil's Own Languages (POL) subject in our national schools? Why can't we be like Singapore, the nearest country whose example that we can learn from, where we see that knowing another language is important and it helps them secure places in universities and scholarships later as they further their studies.

Here it is always about race and positions. Today's schools' leadership roles are all dominated by the Malays; will we see more Indian headmasters and headmistresses appointed? Will we see more Indian males being given a chance and encouraged to take up teaching as a profession and staying in schools to teach and mould our future generations, just like what they did in the yesteryears?

What the current set of MIC leaders have forgotten is that as they had concentrated on amassing wealth when they found that all their pleas were falling on deaf ears, the Indians were going through a phase of transformation from rural agricultural based livelihoods to becoming the new urban underclass. They had no other alternative but to come to the urban areas when their estates cashed in on the lucrative land track deals that land hungry developers were after.

With the emergence of this new underclass coupled with the fact that many Indians were retiring from civil service and not being replaced by Indians but by Malays, the Indians were simply left to fend for themselves.

Some had connections, whilst others had an opportunity to enter into the 'Ali Baba' mode of doing business. It did help somewhat but the vast majority where simply left behind.

Without much education except that for mother tongue education, many from this urban underclass had to look to other means to survive. Crime was one of the easiest ways out and that is one reason why the Indians form the majority of those who are being held under the Emergency Ordinance(EO) in Simpang Renggam, Johor.

Will the two ministers address these issues and allow the hardworking Indians a chance to show their mettle without succumbing to the 'Ali Baba' model? Will Indians be given loans? Will we see Indian appointment in government linked companies (GLCs) ?

Can we see Indians being allowed to own and run petrol stations? Will we see Indians who are now doing well in the scrap metal business be encouraged to go big in the metal industry and become the next Laskmi Mittal?

Or will these two ministers tell the Indians that they will have to succumb to the 'Ali Baba' model after all, and depend on the Malays for licenses, sub-contracts and other forms of government hand-outs which are dished out to the Malays first as part of 'affirmative action', who then sell them to the Chinese and the Indians?

Instead of giving two full ministerships, it will be better to have bold and courageous Indian leadership who will question the PM and his cabinet if there has been negligence and neglect like what we saw in the death in police custody of A Kugan, and ask that Indian equity be raised based on the ability of the Indians in free market without begging the Malays for licenses and forcing them to take on bumi sleeping partners just for the sake of fulfilling the 30 percent stake that the Malays demand, without lifting a finger?

None of the current set of MIC leaders have been bold enough to debate with the government on fundamental constitutional rights and human rights. It has always been the opposition Indian leaders, who always have to pay the price for being bold enough to demand that the government responds, so will giving two full ministerships do any good here?

Further with most of the current set of MIC leaders being educated in the 'Samy Vellu School of Politics and Social Governance' of the Indians, we can expect more camps and factions amongst the party members instead of good and healthy competition.

Furthermore, the two full ministers will have to have the courage to debate with the Malays in the education ministry as to why the novel Interlok was introduced as a history textbook when there are better books written before by other well known educationists in the country of whom many were Indians.

What the two full ministers will have to do is to make sure that the Malays understand what the concept of equality is and the Indians believe in the concept of equality, instead of simply accepting whatever that has been stated in Article 153 of the federal constitution.

The Indian founding fathers may have traded these rights for a right to stay here and become citizens but today after nearly 800 years of history and active relations for the past 300 years, aren't we Indians also the 'putras' of this 'bumi' ?

Why must we tolerate being called and made fun of as pariahs and pendatangs? Why must the term 'go back to India' come to the forethought of Malay politicians each and every time there is a spat with the Indians?

Why must we stomach the threat of revoking citizenships? Will the two ministers stand up for this?

Therefore having two Indian ministers in the cabinet is not enough, it must dawn on the prime minister that he is not just a PM for the Malays but he must acknowledge that Chinese and Indians also make up what we call Malaysians, and their problem is a Malaysian problem which every leader be it Malay, Chinese or Indian will have to share and try to solve to make live better and equal for everyone.

IGP and deputy, step down for lying to public

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 11:24 PM PDT

On behalf of the party, PSM would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the brave people for all their effort, solidarity, support and struggle in ensuring the release of our six comrades. We wish to thank the massive support from all quarters – the civil society movements, the NGOs, the legal assistance from the lawyers, Pakatan Rakyat parties the DAP, PKR, PAS as well as PRM.

Also individuals from BN like Khairy Jamaluddin, individuals in Gerakan, MCA and MIC. As well the great solidarity of the International community as well as the international socialist parties all over the world.

We thank all those who have sent letters, solidarity message and participated in online petition, those who lodged police reports, send in memorandum, collected signatures, spoken out, held nightly vigils, held prayers and kept protesting the arrest.

We dedicate this release to all these brave people in Malaysia and all over the world, They are the true heroes who released our six comrades. This is a victory for all those who demanded for change and stood up against oppression. We are humbled by this great support, courage and solidarity.

Five main issues PSM wants to raise:

1. Before we go into that, we would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the wardens and the policemen who according to our released comrades took very good care of them and treated them well and with respect.

The problem is not with the lower ranking policemen but with the top level of the police force. We call for the immediate resignation of the IGP and especially the deputy IGP, both of whom we consider were the main actors in manufacturing lies and fabricating evidence to punish PSM and the EO6.

They have lied to the Malaysians over the last 34 days that

  • PSM is waging war against DYMM Yang DiPertuan Agong.
  • PSM trying to revive the MCP
  • PSM working with foreign agents elements to topple the Government
  • PSM is the "penggerak" or the main organiser of BERSIH
Because of this manipulation, the IGP and the DIGP should resign.

2. The arrest and the detention of the PSM6 is unlawful, illegal and in bad faith. The central committee of the party will discuss with our lawyer on the next course of action with regards to this.

3. We call for the AG to drop the case against of the 24 other PSM members and grassroots members who have been charged on other ridiculous grounds related to Bersih 2.0 especially for distributing Bersih leaflets. Bersih was only declared illegal by the Home Ministry on July 2 whereas the 24 were arrested on 25 June. It is therefore a waste of public funds for the government to pursue the charges, and we call upon the AG to drop this case.

4. We call for the repeal of the Emergency Ordinance (EO), Internal Security Act (ISA), as well as the Dangerous Drug Act's special prevention measures that allows detention without trial. All detention without trial laws should go. The government should seek to either charge detainees or release them.

5. PSM will next embark on a nationwide tour to explain to the people the true reason behind the arrests of our members and the conspiracy against PSM, and to continue our call 'Udahlah tu....bersaralah', as well as to thank the people for their support as well as explain

Long live the people! Long live PSM

S Arutchelvan is PSM secretary general.
